The Sturgeon Moon of 2023: A Chance to Reflect & Exfoliate

Updated: Sep 22, 2023

The Sturgeon Moon...What is it?

The Sturgeon Moon, also known as the Corn Moon or the Green Corn Moon, is a unique full moon that occurs every year, usually in August. Its name has deep cultural roots and has been passed down through generations, gifted to us by indigenous tribes and ancient civilizations. This moon's name can be attributed to the abundance of sturgeon fish in North American lakes during this time of the year.

The Date and Appearance of the Sturgeon Moon in 2023

This year, the Sturgeon Moon rose on Tuesday at 1:31 p.m. and set at 4:11 a.m. Wednesday.

Although it already passed earlier this week, the lunar cycle will continue to a new moon phase on the 16th and culminate with the third super moon, which will also be a Blue Moon on August 30. This summer series will end on September 28 with the Full Corn Moon, marking the last supermoon until September 2024.

The Sturgeon Moon's Significance and Cultural Beliefs

Throughout history, the full moon has been the subject of various cultural beliefs and rituals, often linked to agricultural cycles, nature's rhythms, and celestial wonders. The Sturgeon Moon holds particular significance in the lives of indigenous communities and early agricultural societies. This is because for Native American tribes, the Sturgeon Moon marked the opportune time for harvesting and gathering crops, especially corn, which is why it is sometimes referred to as the Corn Moon. The moon served as a natural calendar, guiding them in their agricultural activities and celebrations.

Moreover, the Sturgeon Moon carries spiritual importance, acting as a reminder of the intimate connection between humans and nature. It offers a moment of reflection, gratitude, and unity with the cosmos.

How to Honor the Sturgeon Moon & Turn it Into A Beauty Ritual

  1. Listen to what's rising up for you & hold space for yourself: As the ancient sturgeon rises, so can older parts of ourselves. These parts may have been hidden for a long time. Now is the time to catch those "fish" and face the hard feelings, bound-up emotions, and memories that we might not even realize are having an impact on our day to day lives. Sturgeon have often been mistaken for sea monsters - so often we hold parts of ourselves at bay, thinking them to be terrifying, too big for us to hold, unmanageable. Rather, they are often vulnerable parts of us that have been frozen in the past until it's time to rise to the surface and be held.

The Sturgeon Moon of 2023 presents a remarkable opportunity to connect with the natural world, the cosmos and yourself. This season is the perfect time to pause and reflect. By embracing the ancient wisdom and cultural significance of this event, we deepen our appreciation for the cycles of nature, our dance with the cosmos and the beauty of our lives.
