Roadmap to Your Fall Skincare Routine

Road trip season is here, the pumpkin spice has arrived, and so has the need to readjust your skincare routine because our skin doesn't need to take a detour though the scenic route as well. We're here to keep here on the highway! As the leaves change and the air turns cooler, it's often time to transition your skincare to address the unique qualities this time of year brings to our skin. In this blog, I'll guide you through a fall skincare routine to help you maintain a healthy, radiant complexion all season long.

CLEANSE YOUR CABINET

The first thing I always recommend at the start of every new season is clean(s)ing out your skincare cabinet. We do not need any expired product lingering around and cluttering up our precious wall or bag space. Ways to determine if your skincare has expired is to first look for the shelf life of the product on the back of its container. It often looks like this:

Once you've located this on the back of your product recycle anything that is past its prime. Because just like our skincare, we are aiming to stay in our prime - not out of it. Now that you've exfoliated your skincare cabinet (hehe) we're ready to reconfigure or help you know what you might need to consider adding to your fall skincare lineup.

YOUR FALL SKINCARE ROUTINE

With every change of season it's important to consider the shifts in season temperature, lifestyle, humidity and even often diet. Any shift in our lifestyle and environment can affect the skin and keeping it balanced is the main goal.

  1. Cleanser: Start your fall skincare routine with a gentle and hydrating cleanser. Consider switching to a cream or oil-based cleanser as the cooler weather can be harsh on your skin, leading to dryness and irritation. I always recommend double cleaning starting with an oil cleanser to break up dirt and makeup and follow with a creamy cleanse to actually cleanse your skin following.

  2. Exfoliation: Fall is a great time to exfoliate. Opt for chemical exfoliants like glycolic acid or lactic acid, for a smoother exfoliation. Use them 2-3 times a week to reveal smoother, brighter skin. Physical scrub exfoliants are often a bit harsher but if you go with a professional physical scrub like the one linked below you can certainly be confidant in that product. Just be gentle! :)

  3. Toner: Hydrating toners are fabulous year round but especially in the fall and winter months helping your skin prep for product penetration also giving you an extra pop of hydration. I always prep my skin prior to applying treatment serums with a good hydrating toner. Great recommendation linked below. One of my favorites for Fall/in general but especially in Fall is the PCA nutrient toner as it is made with pumpkin enzyme and smells delicious but is also hydrating.

  4. Serums: The insurance of your skin - the ant-oxidant! Make sure to always include an antioxidant serum year round, but especially in the months where environmental stressors are at an all time high. These protect your skin from environmental stressors preventing damage.

  5. Eye Cream: As well know, the thin skin around our eyes is prone to dryness and fine lines etc. especially as the season changes. Use an eye cream with ingredients like peptides and retinol to hydrate, firm, and reduce puffiness. In the fall months a hydrating eye cream is a must.

  6. Retinol: Less time in the sun makes it a great time to start a retinol routine if you haven't yet! Retinol is the work out/cardio session our skin needs keeping it moving, brighter & smoother.

  7. Moisturize: Your skin needs an extra layer too. With the drop in temperature and humidity, your skin may become dry and dehydrated. Invest in a rich, hydrating moisturizer that locks in moisture and forms a protective barrier. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and shea butter to keep your skin supple and nourished. Some of my favorites are linked below.

  8. Sunscreen: Just because summer is over does not mean you are off the hook with your SPF. SPF is not seasonal.

UV rays are present year-round, and they can still damage your skin, even on cloudy days. Opt for a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin from harmful UV radiation.

  1. Lip Care: Dehydrated chapped lips are so common in the fall. Use a nourishing lip balm/mask to keep your lips soft and hydrated. Also exfoliate your lips occasionally with a gentle sugar scrub to remove dead skin. All linked below.

FALL PROOF YOUR HOME & LIFESTYLE

  1. Hydrate: Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and consuming foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins. These nutrients help maintain your skin's natural moisture and radiance.

  2. Nighttime: Your night skincare routine is crucial for skin repair and rejuvenation. Apply a heavier night cream or moisturizer to replenish lost moisture and promote healing while you sleep.

  3. Seasonal Adjustments: Be attuned to your skin's changing needs throughout the fall season. Adjust your routine as necessary, such as adding a humidifier to combat indoor dryness or using a hydrating mask when your skin feels extra parched.

TREATMENT ROOM

Also, with less time in the sun, the winter and fall months are a great time for our skincare and skincare treatments! Consider a laser treatment and or a peel series during g these winter months to boost you while spending more time indoors.

Conclusion: Transitioning to a fall skincare routine is essential for maintaining a healthy and radiant complexion. By cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, and protecting your skin, you can combat the challenges that Fall weather brings. Remember to stay consistent with your routine, stay hydrated, and adapt to your skin's evolving needs to ensure a beautiful, glowing complexion all season long.
